PAX West 2021 will require attendees to prove they’re vaccinated or COVID-free

PAX West, the world’s largest gaming convention, is going mobile. Starting this year, every PAX attendee will be required to prove they’re vaccinated (or COVID-free) for diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella. This is no small move at a time when measles is making a comeback, especially in the Pacific Northwest.

In 2019, the State of Washington passed a law requiring all public school students to be vaccinated against pertussis before attending school. The law states that parents cannot choose to opt-out of vaccinations for their children, and that schools must notify parents of this policy and provide a pamphlet explaining all of the requirements. This new policy is designed to combat the increase in pertussis cases in the region. In the last year, there has been an 88% increase in the number of people who have contracted pertussis. For the past two years, Washington has had the highest rate of pertussis cases in the United States. This increase in cases has led the state to enact a law that requires all children to be vaccinated against the disease before

PAX West is one of the many annual events that pop up in the Bay area and draw tens of thousands of people to the city. As the event goes on, the media has fueled the panic about the increasing number of people who have not been vaccinated for measles, mumps, and other diseases.. PAX West will not admit attendees unless they have been vaccinated or have passed a current COVID-19 test. The convention will need evidence of one of the other’s identities, as well as ID verification. “We are sure that complete immunization or a negative test, along with ongoing facial covering restrictions for everyone, will create an atmosphere that supports the wellness of our PAX community,” ReedPop’s Kyle Marsden-Kish stated today.

In June, Penny Arcade representatives revealed the in-person format for the autumn. It will take place from September 3rd through September 6th. COVID cases are on the increase again in the United States, while immunization rates have stalled.

Here’s the whole statement in its entirety.

Throughout the year, the PAX crew has been working hard to ensure that our PAX West attendees are secure. We are happy to inform that, in accordance with the advice of state and municipal public health authorities, we will require everyone attending PAX West to be vaccinated or have a negative COVID-19 test. We appreciate your patience as we worked to develop a thorough plan with our venue and the authorities.

We will now need evidence of completion of the COVID-19 vaccine series or a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test prior to admission, both of which must be confirmed with a valid, government-issued ID. Please contact PAX Questions at PAX [email protected] if you have any questions or issues regarding this requirement after purchasing badges.

When the badges for PAX West 2021 were revealed, the PAX Team decided to share what we could commit to at the moment rather than what we were working on. While we warned the community that the health and safety guidelines might change, we wanted to get it right the first time, and we’re confident that verifying full vaccination or a negative test, as well as continuing to require everyone to cover their faces, will create an environment that promotes our PAX community’s well-being.

The PAX team is committed to health and safety, which includes limiting capacity and requiring attendees, exhibitors, employees, and Enforcers to wear facial covers at all times. We’ll keep evaluating our rules, listening to community input, following the advice of public health experts, and doing all we can to make PAX West as safe as possible. We’ll always do our best to help the worldwide gaming community and the locations where PAX takes place.

If you plan on making it to PAX West next year, you might want to make sure you’ve been vaccinated before you hit the show floor. “Vaccinations are required to be present at the show in order to enter PAX West,” said a representative from the convention. “This is a standard policy that we’ve been practicing since the first PAX.”.
