Blizzard Entertainment CEO, Mike Morhaime, just announced that the CEO of their Game Studio will be leaving Blizzard. This news is rather surprising given that Craig Morrison has been the CEO of Blizzard for over a decade and the CEO of their Game Studio for over 7 years. He has lead the studio through the development of the most successful MMO in history, World of Warcraft, and has single handedly brought Overwatch to the forefront of the gaming industry.
Craig Morrison, who has been serving as the Senior VP of Communications for Blizzard Entertainment for the past few years, has decided he is going to start a new adventure. (He is currently in the process of moving to Canada.)
In a video message posted on Blizzard’s Twitter account on Friday, Blizzard President and CEO Mike Morhaime announced that he will be stepping down from the company in July 2013. Morrison, who was appointed to the top post at Blizzard in 2005, will be leaving the company to pursue other opportunities. Although the company did not provide further details, Morrison’s departure is still a big surprise for gamers because he was widely regarded as one of the most influential executives in the gaming industry.. It’s time for yet another name you may know from Blizzard, but you could also recognize him from other projects. Craig Morrison has announced his resignation from Blizzard Entertainment through Twitter, stating that his leave had been planned for some time and occurred last week, but that publicizing it last week would have been the wrong moment. Of course, revealing it now is inconvenient, given that J. Allen Brack’s departure has dominated the news this morning. Let’s face it, there’s no good moment for anything right now at Blizzard.
The Twitter thread has no information regarding the reasons for his leaving.
Morrison’s name should be known to anybody with a stake in the MMO market, since he served as the director of Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, and The Secret World during his time at Funcom. He was the Design Manager for three World of Warcraft expansions (Legion, Warlords of Draenor, and Battle for Azeroth) as well as World of Warcraft Classic, and then became the Principal Designer for Shadowlands and The Burning Crusade Classic.
