I’ve always been a puzzle person. When I’m feeling bored (which is often), I get a lot of satisfaction solving puzzles, and I’m constantly on the lookout for new ones. Puzzles are one of my favorite things, and I’m a bit of a dork for them.
We don’t know much about Bungie’s upcoming Destiny 2, but according to reports, it seems like the game is going to be based around a new narrative-driven campaign, called “Beyond”. It’s not clear what Bungie plans to do with the campaign, but from reports, it seems that the game will feature a story primarily driven by the main character, Ikora Rey, a guardian who acts as a mentor to the player.
The story ofDestinymay have started out as a chaotic mess, but it has gradually evolved into a sprawling and complex space opera. From the riddle of the rogue traveler in the vanilla version of Destiny, to the reset in Destiny 2, to the Red War storyline, to the acceptance of darkness in Beyond Light, there’s been a lot going on. So much so that following the story of Destiny 2 can be a bit confusing (to say the least).

Chapter 1: Golden Age
Image: Bungie
Before you woke up in Stara Russa, the Golden Age was in full swing after humanity met the Traveler. This icon of light has traveled from planet to planet, transforming them, sharing his knowledge and empowering the various planetary races. This led to the expansion of Earth to Venus, Mars and even Titan, and the creation of Exos – androids with human consciousness – by the sociopathic industrialist Clovis Bray.
This significant progress was interrupted at the collapse, when an incorporeal darkness emerged and destroyed most of humanity. The Traveler sacrificed himself to dispel the darkness, went into hibernation and created Ghost Shells (small robots filled with light) to find and resurrect people who had been chosen to become what we call the Guardians. Eventually, a group of these people, known as the Iron Lords, united to found the Last City among the Travelers.
Chapter 2: Your story begins
Continue the story of Destiny and you will be brought to life by the Ghost for the first time. You don’t remember your old life, but you immediately gain the strength of a traveler and leave for the Last City. In the tower you will meet the main characters – Zavala, Kaid-6 and Ikora, known as the Vanguard. You will also learn about the history of travelers from the speaker, who will tell you about your mission to protect travelers from threats to the universe.
Image: Bungie
In a series of missions, you’ll encounter the Fallen and the Hives, as well as the long-dormant Warmind AI known as Rasputin. You can now leave Earth and travel to the moon to find out what the Hive ship is up to and meet the Exo-Alien for the first time. She helps you destroy the Hive and then warns you about the time machines known as Vex as you search for Venus.
He also sends you to the Reef, home of the Awakened, the fused beings of light and darkness, to meet Queen Mara of the Owls and her brother Prince Uldren. You also meet the friendly fallen sect known as the House of Wolves and discover the home of the Vex on Mars, the Black Garden. This timeless bag contains the physical part of the darkness that the Vex are trying to expand to assimilate the galaxy.
They visit Mars, confront a hostile society and capture the eye of the Gatelord Vex to unlock the Black Garden. After you have killed your heart, you meet the stranger, take up her weapon and wait to hear from her until you are past the light.
Chapter 3: Darkness under
Image: Bungie
The destruction of the Heart in the Black Garden helped the guard Eris Morn (now transformed by darkness) escape from the caves under the moon. She warns of a hive prince named Mole, who collects incredible powers in the moon and is able to steal the light from the Guardians. In fact, he used this power to destroy Eris’ entire fire team during the final attack on Ruin Rock.
It’s your job to defeat his physical form, destroy the Hive Mage’s Omnigool before the Mole resurrects, and destroy him once and for all in the Mole’s End Raid. Here you will encounter his true form and destroy his essence once and for all.
Chapter 4: Wolf House
Skolas, captain of the Fallen and member of the House of Wolves, attempts a coup against Queen Mara Owl and the Awakened. In an attempt to unite all the sects of the Fallen and become the Kell of Kell, Skolas plans to use Vex technology to gain an advantage over the Awakened.
After ordering the queen’s emissary, Petra Wenge, to track down Scolas, capture him alive and send him to the elders’ prison, where you can beat him again and again.
Chapter 5: King took
Image: Bungie
Taken King is a new take on the origin story of Destiny , and introduces Mole’s father and the God King of the Hive, Oryx. He is stationed at Saturn on a massive ship, the Dreadnought, and immediately asserts his presence and power by destroying the entire Awakened fleet, including Queen Mara Owls. Seeking revenge for the death of his son, Oryx begins to unleash his army of Taken, former members of various enemy races turned into dark reflections, presumably to destroy those who control the light.
Eris Morn, who has a strange connection to the Hive after being isolated on the moon, begins the siege of the Dreadnought with you and Caid-6. They immediately encounter Society soldiers trying to find and destroy Oryx for kidnapping their fellow Watchers, and travel further into the depths of the ship to find the cloaking technology that can open the battleship to the other Watchers.
Eventually you track down Oryx and destroy him, and then you destroy his divine form in the Fall of the King raid. With a power vacuum in the Hive Command as the Society sends a distress signal outside the solar system, several sinister events take place even after this unlikely victory.
Chapter 6: Iron Rebellion
Image: Bungie
The latest expansion forDestinyexplores the story of the Iron Lords who protected the last remnants of humanity during the Great Collapse. This is helped by the fact that the House of Fallen Demons is looking for Golden Age nanotechnology, known as SIVA, to become Splicers. Lord Saladin, who is leading the Iron Banner Tournament, is the last of these lords and instructs you to find out what the traps are planning.
After meeting a SIVA-infected Sepix Prime (and listening to the rock theme), the quest takes you to Plageland in ancient Russia to destroy the SIVA infection. We learn that the Iron Lords sacrificed themselves to contain the initial outbreak caused by the Warm Rasputin, as an innate defense mechanism. You manage to stop the Splicer leaders during a Rage of the Machine attack and quarantine the Plagelands to prevent their spread in the future.
Chapter 7: Destiny 2 and the Red War begins
Image: Bungie
Two years after the first episode of Destiny , this is the first part of the story of Destiny 2 , in which the Society’s distress signal returns to haunt you. Dominus Gaul, the leader of the Red Legion, then travels to Earth, destroying the Last City and locking up the traveler, causing you to lose your light. After escaping, go to the European Dead Zone (EDZ) to find the renegade part of the Traveler. You regain your skills, team up with the leader of the urban refugees, Suraya Hawthorne, and return home.
After finding Zavala on Titan, Ikora on Io and Caid-6 on Nessus, bring them all together to devise a plan of attack. The current threat is the Almighty, a warship designed to charge the sun until it goes supernova and destroys the entire system. Because the universe is so wild and full of enemies, society sees this as the only way to win.
As the only guard with light, you board the ship and destroy it, only for Ghoul to kill the speaker and pump the travelers’ remaining energy into himself. It turns into a giant light creature that almost kills you, until Traveller wakes up and destroys the ghoul, making it appear to have been killed. Now that light has returned, of course darkness has also returned – you can see the pyramid of vessels of darkness to earth.
You are also contacted by the fallen emperor Calus and invited to challenge him on his massive ship, the Leviathan, the size of a city. Leviathan, Eater of Worlds and Spire of Stars fall within this. You first try to reach Calus, but you are defeated by a powerful mechanical look-alike. Then help eliminate the Vex invasion and stop the Red Legion coup attempt. The Leviathan then disappears with the Emperor.
Chapter 8: Curse of Osiris
Image: Bungie
After being alone on Mercury in the Crucible, you can finally explore it with mentor Ikora and the exiled mage Osiris. Unfortunately, the transgressors have completely transformed the planet and created a massive simulation known as the Infinite Forest. Osiris realized during his captivity, that the offended were using him to study possible outcomes and manipulate time.
They enter the simulation, rescue Osiris, destroy a future where the Vexes triumph and help Osiris take control of the Infinite Forest. Osiris then begins to explore the possible outcomes in hopes of understanding the threat of the coming darkness.
Chapter 9: Warmind
This part of the Destiny 2 story features Ana Bray, the granddaughter of the mythical Clovis Bray, who has discovered Rasputin’s true location on Mars. During the collapse, Varmind was attacked by Nokris (necromancer and exiled son of Oryx) and by the giant worm-god Hive and the harbinger of darkness known as Xol.
To stop Noqris and Xol, Rasputin froze an area on Mars known as the Hellas Basin, in which he imprisoned Hive and himself. Rasputin now uses the other Warsawites to melt the ice, allowing you to enter Rasputin’s compound to defeat the two Hive leaders and discover Rasputin’s intentions. You also get the Whisper sniper rifle, which may be a remnant of Xol. No one knows for sure if the beehive worm is trying to infect you or if it’s just sleeping, but it will probably reappear later.
Chapter 10: Output
Image: Bungie
Another difficult starting point in the Destiny 2 story, Forsaken begins with you and Caid-6 trying to prevent a breakout into the Ancient prison. They eventually split up and meet the Barons of Scorn, a powerful group of enhanced outlaws that Caid placed there. They are led by Prince Uldren Sov, who executes Caid on the spot.
Oddly enough, the Drifter and Gambit game modes are presented simultaneously. Strangely, Drifter forces you to collect and save the Darkness patterns, suggesting that he may have more information about the impending threat of the Darkness Pyramids.
Returning to the main story, you travel to the Tangent Coast – a vast area of asteroids chained together in the reef – and meet the outlaw Lord Spider. By entering into a temporary partnership, you offer services to the spider and in return receive information about the barons you track down and destroy.
Finally, you meet Uldren, who is trying to open the forbidden sanctuary of the Awakened, known as the City of Dreams. It turns out that he has been infected by the Taken and has fallen under the influence of Riven, the wish-altering dragon known as Ahamkara, who was once hunted and nearly destroyed by the Guardians. Riven worked with the Awakened Queen, but was kidnapped by Savatoon during the events of The Taken King.
Uldren is killed, the way to the City of Dreams is opened, and the Hive, the Scourge and the Taken can enter. Savatun’s true plan is revealed when you learn that she wants to go to the Divider, the ancestral Palace of the Awakened, where light meets darkness. They enter the City of Dreams via the Last Wish-raid and kill Riven, but cause a curse that causes the city to find itself in a three-week time loop. And to this day, you try to break the curse by breaking the rituals of the Hive and the Taken, where they try to enter the Firth of Ascendant.
It was also revealed that Mara Sov had used this same process to reach Ascendant level and that she was now alive and could be brought to life in our world. This scenario will likely take place in the Witch Queen expansion in 2022.
Chapter 11: Forging time
Image: Bungie
Thanks to regular seasonal content, we are now introduced to the sole survivor of Golden Age weapons production, the exo known as Ada-1. Of course, the traps try to take these weapons for themselves, but Ada doesn’t want your help at first. Instead, it tests you to the limit and forces you to gradually restart the forges of the Black Armory, where you can make incredible weapons.
By the end of this season, you’ve defeated Seavix, the leader of the fallen group, and made your way to an old weapons bunker in the ruined streets of the Last City. Of course, you will encounter the Fallen who are trying to reboot a giant mecha called Insurrection Prime, which you must destroy.
Chapter 12: Drift season
Image: Bungie
The Drifter returns with new game modes, Gambit Prime and Reckoning, and a wealth of historical information. In this one, you have to enter the cargo bay to deal with the Taqenen enemies (and of course collect more dark moths). As the season progresses, you gradually learn more about Drifter’s history, his influence on the Destiny 2 storyline, and the guardian couple Shin Malfour and Dredgen Yor.
Dredgen was once a representative of the Crucible, but he eventually succumbed to the darkness because of Thorne, his Hive weapon. Shin tracks down and defeats Yor, as well as a group of followers known as the Shadow of Yor, who believe that the use of darkness is the key to his victory. It turns out that Drifter was one of them, and it’s up to you to investigate his activities on behalf of Vanguard.
At the end you have to choose a side, which limits some rewards, but doesn’t seem to affect the story in any way. Vanguard reluctantly accepts that Drifter is not a bad guy and that working with him is always beneficial. You also have access to a copy of Thorn, as well as Sheen’s weapon, The Last Word, which the legendary Guardian uses to prevent the Hive people from creating the real Thorn for themselves.
Chapter 13: Luxury season
Emperor Calus returns to Destiny 2 with a new team, the Menagerie. This mini raid puzzle is designed to challenge and prepare you for battle against the corrupt hive society known as Galran in the Crown of Sorrow raid. A man of mystery, Calus tried to recruit spies from the Hive, but discovered that they were not easy to control.
He took the Crown of Sorrow, a relic from the realm of the Ascended, and forced Galhran to wear it in an attempt to capture the Hive Agent. Of course this failed and he became corrupt and was himself controlled by Sawatoon. Fortunately, you have the option of sinking into the Leviathan to put an end to Savatoon and the crown of sorrow that will return.
Chapter 14: Shadowkeep and Season of Undying
Image: Bungie
The Pyramids of Darkness are here! Of course, they decide to park on the moon, which gives us many exciting new moments in the story of Destiny 2 .
The landing of the Pyramids of Darkness leads to the discovery of the Scarlet Keep, a massive fortress of the dark side. Thanks to Eris, we learn again that this castle is built around a massive pyramid of darkness, proving how little the Vanguards know about their enemy.
The awakening of the darkness brings back the remains of the guards and other enemies, such as the mole, who have been killed. They’ve spread all over the solar system, so you must track them down and find out what brought them back before the ghosts of the ancient Eris fire team drive them mad. Eventually this leads to you defeating Mole’s daughter, Hashladun, and communicating directly with the darkness. It appears as your reflection in the Black Garden and tries to persuade you to move away from the light.
They are not so easily persuaded, appearing with the artifact and handing it over to Eris for further investigation. Of course, this is all connected to the Vexes, who have awakened the Immortal Spirit and want to take over the pyramid on the moon. This leads to a massive attack by Ikora through the rebuilt Vex gate in the Tower and the discovery of a signal in the Black Garden. When you return through the Garden of Redemption, you will find an identical statue of the Being of Darkness.
Chapter 15: The season of the dawn
Image: Bungie
Osiris is back and he has a time machine he calls a sundial. He hopes to use it to find his old friend Saint-14, who the Titans probably know from his cute exotic helmet. Of course, while Osiris was using Sandial, some psionic pilots have taken control of it and are trying to use it to create a timeline in which they won the Red War.
They will eventually defeat the Psions in different timelines in the Destiny 2 scenario and find Sen-14, save him and bring him back to the present.
Chapter 16: A season with dignity
Not wanting to give up so easily, the Red Legion makes one last attempt and controls the Almighty. It is in orbit around Mercury and is successfully launched to Earth, where it will destroy the last city. If you don’t have enough firepower, where are you going? Rasputin, of course, with his network of combat satellites that you help develop by sending new satellites into orbit.
While doing so, you learn more about the Iron Lords, including that Felwinter was in fact an exo created by Rasputin to study humanity. It turns out that Rasputin intentionally unleashed SIVA on the Lords to finally get his part back, which he now seems to regret. Rasputin proves this by defeating the Almighty at the end of the season in the first ever Destiny live event.
Chapter 17: Arrival season
Image: Bungie
It appears that the Pyramids of Darkness have been getting closer and closer over the last season. They eventually arrive via Io, Mars, Mercury and Titan and immediately take out Rasputin, who saves Anna a little. Strangely, the darkness begins to send out coded signals and offer weapons and armor. Savatun and Xol are constantly trying to destroy the guards visiting the pyramids and seem to want you to stay in the shadows.
At this point in the story of Destiny 2, you are evacuating the planets and returning to the tower, when suddenly the spirits of the entire system feel a strong pull. The traveler is reformed, and suddenly all the planets above which the darkness hovered (kuch… kuch… sunset content) disappear.
Chapter 18: Beyond the light and hunting time
Image: Bungie
The darkness isn’t over yet though, and the story of Destiny 2 then takes you to Europe. The fallen Kell, known as Eramis, has found another way to control the darkness with a technique called stasis. With the Exo Alien, Drifter and Eris Morn finally back, you must simultaneously destroy the traps and learn more about stasis.
As the campaign progresses, you continue to communicate with the darkness and discover new aspects and fragments of stasis. They also visit Bray’s research colony and discover a giant living exotic by Clovis Bray himself. It turns out he may have invited the Vex into the solar system by exploring stasis and possibly causing the Great Collapse. Moreover, his original form is Exo Banshee-44, which has been erased so many times that he no longer possesses the vile personality of his former self.
Moreover, upon your return to the forgotten shore, you will find a reborn and spirited Uldren prince, who now works for the Spider and calls himself Raven. With him and Osiris, you must destroy the sister of Oryx, the hive god of wrath, who is trying to exploit the recent attacks of darkness.
At the end of the season, you and Crowe managed to stop Hive’s plans and helped Crowe come to terms with his memories by getting Hawkmoon’s parts back. Knowing that he is now an entirely different being, Osiris takes him as a guardian, leading him to the tower.
