Rip and roar so you can soar

Final Fantasy XIV contends with full servers and wait lists for its digital version

Final Fantasy XIV is a MMORPG (massive multiplayer online roleplaying game) that launched online in October 2013. While the game itself isn’t new, until recently, the servers were always filled with players waiting for others to finish up and join in. That changed in August of this year, when Square Enix announced that the upcoming expansion would bring a new server to the game so the population could breathe a little easier.

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) developed by Square Enix and released on PC in 2010. It’s available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Final Fantasy XIV has a player base so large that it is the largest MMORPG in the world, with over six million subscribers. The game’s launch is plagued with ongoing technical problems that have led it to be in a state of “beta,” a label used to describe a game that is still in development.

You might be tired of hearing about Final Fantasy XIV , , but the influx of players the game is getting is very noticeable. Since yesterday, players have been reporting that almost all of the game’s servers have been closed to creating new characters due to the influx of players. At the time of writing, Monday morning, that’s not the case, as you can see from the picture we took ourselves, but the digital edition of is is still on the waiting list at the official Square Enix store.

So what is it? More and more people seem to be trying out the game, creating characters and signing up, as we’ve written about before. The game’s Steam rankings continue to rise, with an influx of new players via the , platform as well (although, as before, it’s important to note that Steam is not the game’s primary platform). It’s hard to pinpoint a specific reason, but we suspect it has to do with poor reception of competitive games, popular streamers and Endwalkers reference streamers and weekend streamers. And it’s a good MMO – did we mention it’s our 2020 MMO of the Year? Either way, the excitement about the next expansion and the game as a whole hasn’t gone away.
