Microsoft will turn OneDrive into a Progressive Web App

by | Aug 16, 2020

Microsoft has been operating OneDrive as a desktop-only service, which means it is only available to Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile users. But, today at its Build 2018 conference, the company announced that OneDrive for Business will soon be available on Windows 10 PCs, while a separate version of the app will be available for Android and iOS. So, this means that OneDrive will soon be available on all the major desktop and mobile platforms, even if that doesn’t mean it will be available to all users.

Progressive Web Apps, or PWAs, are a Google-led movement to create native-like apps for mobile devices. Struggling with how to get a Google App on your phone? Then you’re in luck, as Google is now creating PWAs that take advantage of the power of native apps to make them more mobile-friendly.

  • Progressive web apps could be a big step forward for the Windows 10 app store.
  • Microsoft is slowly starting to update some of its web services with mandatory PWA features.
  • The first application in the series, Microsoft’s OneDrive is finally becoming a true Progressive Web App.
  • The tech company plans to begin rolling out the updated OneDrive PWA in early July 2021.

Looking to the future means always taking a fresh look, striving for innovation and design, and constantly improving already successful services. With that in mind, it looks like Progressive Web Apps for the Windows 10 App Store could take a big leap forward in the future.

OneDrive, the first step towards more PWA Windows

Microsoft sees this opportunity and is starting to add some PWA features to its web services, such as offline support and push notifications. Right now, though, many of Microsoft’s sites and services that we use all the time aren’t exactly PWA-friendly, to say the least. It now looks like OneDrive will finally become a true Progressive Web App. Essentially, OneDrive will be able to be installed as a full-fledged web app on Windows 10 and other devices. This means that by installing OneDrive PWA on your Windows PC, Mac or Chromebook, you can treat the online storage like a native app. Once you have installed the web version of OneDrive as a Progressive Web App, you can launch it from your desktop and it works just like in a web browser. Pay attention: OneDrive PWA will no longer have the traditional address bar at the top of the page, nor will it have tabs, which means everything will look more like the native application. According to the updated roadmap, OneDrive PWA will be supported by all popular browsers like Microsoft Edge, Chrome and Firefox.

When does OneDrive become a PWA?

Microsoft plans to begin rolling out the OneDrive PWA update in early July and complete the rollout by the end of the month. OneDrive PWA can also be installed on mobile devices, although Microsoft says the web app is currently only optimized for Windows 10 and macOS. This means the experience won’t be nearly as good as OneDrive’s default mobile app. When OneDrive is updated with new PWA features, a new icon appears directly in the Omnibox or browser’s address bar, prompting users to install the application. The announcement came shortly after the company announced a redesign of the PWA menu for the Edge browser. What do you think of this new initiative from Microsoft? Is progressive web app still around today?

In 2017, as a response to privacy concerns about the browser-based technologies, Google initiated a change to the Google Chrome browser that would render all of the technologies built into the browser as non-progressive, or in other words, non-standard, which made the technologies completely incompatible with the browser’s newly-developed web standards. It’s no secret that web apps have taken over the world, with Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter leading the way. A large portion of the web is filled with mobile-optimized apps, which make it easy to start using your favorite services on the go.
