Latest Defender update deletes certain source code and exe files

For some time now, Microsoft has been talking about a new version of the Windows Defender anti-virus software. While many people use this software to protect their computers from malware, others have been having issues with the update. Some people have reported that the update completely removed their programs, while others have seen their computer freeze completely once the Defender update had finished. Many are now looking at Microsoft as the culprit behind the issues that users are having.

  • Users of Windows 10 are dissatisfied with the activities caused by the most recent Windows Defender upgrade.
  • Apparently. Microsoft’s built-in security tool began removing specific source code and exe files after the July 2021 release.
  • Windows Defender identified a copy of the popular DeCSS DVD encryption software as a Trojan and confined it for 60 seconds before removing it.
  • Other antivirus software, such as Kaspersky, detects no threat, whereas 32 of 72 engines on VirusTotal misidentify this as harmful.

Throughout this post, we’ll talk about a problem that has Windows 10 customers on pins and needles because it’s messing with their saved data.

How many of you are familiar with DeCSS?

If you don’t remember, DeCSS was one of the first free computer tools to decode content on a commercially produced DVD video disc.

Open-source operating systems like BSD and Linux couldn’t play encrypted video DVDs before the advent of DeCSS.

According to a Reddit member who found out exactly what’s going on, the above-mentioned issue is directly tied to this type of software.

Some user files in Windows 10 are deleted after installing the Windows Defender upgrade.

Tizaki, a Reddit user, first discovered something was wrong when he went to check on his archived copy of DeCSS’s Source Code and Complied.exe.

As previously stated, this occurred on Windows 10, OS Build 19043.1110, version 21H1, which was installed on 6/10/2020.

He had no idea that the most recent update to the Windows Defender function would cost him some of the data he had saved.

The daily Windows Defender definitions update identified a copy of the popular DeCSS DVD encryption software as a Trojan and quarantined it for 60 seconds before removing it.

The security technology recognizes the software as the Glupteba!ml Trojan, indicating it as a serious threat, according to Tizaki.

Windows Defender is also misdiagnosing XFX Keygen apps from the mid-2000s as high threats and classifying them as possible ransomware.

Micorosft’s new rigorous restrictions for its trademark security software appear to be intolerant of outdated cracked software and take rapid action against these ostensibly dangerous dangers.

As you can expect, such a topic has prompted unending debate on social media platforms and forums, with many other individuals sharing their own experiences with similar situations.

We experienced an incident at my company when an antivirus broke a program that was used to monitor industrial control systems. After losing monitoring, the industrial control system’s safety logic went “NOPE” and shut everything down.

Granted, the vendor’s poor programming methods, such as not digitally signing the application, didn’t help, but whitelisting specific files was the only way to prevent this from happening again.

If Windows Defender started yeeting our things and giving the middle finger to our exemption list, management would have engineers’ heads on pikes if we said, “We’re waiting for Microsoft to repair their antivirus first before restarting the manufacturing line.”

In comparison, other antivirus software, such as Kaspersky, detects no threats at all. However, 32 out of 72 engines on VirusTotal misidentify this as harmful.

In this instance, the greatest advise anyone could give you is to make a backup of this old software in case you want to use it again, as the operating system would almost certainly destroy it.

Another thing to bear in mind is the necessity of being informed and understanding what to do if Windows Defender accidentally deletes your files.
