How does windows know which program to use to open a file when you double click it?

When you double click on a file, Windows has to decide which program it should use to open the file. It does this by looking for programs that are compatible with the extension of the document and then sorting those programs in alphabetical order. If there is more than one program available, choose your preferred option from the list at “Open With.” This will make it easier when selecting documents in future because they’ll always be listed starting with A-Z.
