Rip and roar so you can soar

Elite Dangerous Odyssey gets better planet visuals, rendering performance boosts, and a host of fixes today

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is the last big update for the game that is due to be released over the next few months. The latest update, version 2.2, brings a number of tweaks and even more improvements to the game. The biggest change is that planets now render significantly better than they did previously.

Frontier Developments, the studio behind Elite Dangerous, released a host of updates today which runs the gamut from rendering and performance improvements to general bug fixes. The big news is that the game no longer sees performance issues when zooming into the planets, which in turn means you should be able to see more of them on your screen.

Elite: Dangerous is the game that is taking the gaming world by storm. It’s a game about taking a long-abandoned megastructure and then turning it into a living, breathing world. And it’s not just a game, it’s an entire universe, with its very own economy, real people, and even its own language. This is a game that appeals to the most hardcore of hardcore gamers, and it’s been getting better and better as time goes on.

The PC version of Elite: Dangerous Odyssey has received its sixth update, which includes various feature changes, speed enhancements, an enhanced camera suite, and a list of bug patches.

Some of these new features, such as enhanced planetary graphics and new planet surface types, the upgraded camera package, AI soldiers at military outposts carrying rocket launchers, and performance enhancements, have already been addressed by developer Frontier Developments. The patch notes go into more detail on the speed gains, including the integration of AMD super-resolution capabilities, which display items at a lower resolution and then upscale them rather of rendering everything in a higher resolution.

Other changes include a fix for POI missions not loading correctly, an increase in the difficulty of professional assassination targets, an added outfitting option to purchase modules and store them instead of installing them on the ship, AI vision ranges now being scaled based on the size of an observed object, and a long list of UI tweaks. The patch notes, like with prior upgrades of similar kind, offer a lengthy list to read over.

In preparation for the release of Update 6, the Elite Dangerous servers will be taken down at around 13:45 UTC/14:45 BST. There will be around 15 minutes of downtime.
