Event log viewers are programs that record important events on your computer. Every application or program that runs on your computer leaves a trace in your event log, and before applications stop or crash, they publish a notification. Every event or change on your computer is recorded in the event log. In other words, an event viewer is a program that searches through long text log files, merges them, and creates a simpler interface for large amounts of technical data. When your computer is not working properly, event viewers are essential because they provide important information about the cause of the problem. Windows 10 has its own built-in event log viewer that allows users to get a detailed look at the processes running on their computer. If you want to analyze information about a specific event, you can also use third-party event viewers.

To use the Windows Event Viewer

  1. Type event in the Windows search tab and select Run as administrator to run the Event Viewer with full privileges.
  2. Then click the Events category in the left pane, and a list of events appears in the middle pane at the top.
  3. When you click on an event, you get detailed information in the bottom center section; double-clicking on an event gives you detailed information in a separate window.
  4. In our example, we check the kernel warning that the CPU core is limited by the system firmware. When you click the Copy button, you can copy all the information to the clipboard and paste it into a document or an Excel file.
  5. You can also use all the options in the right-hand pane to get more information. For example, you can save an event as an .evtx file by clicking Save Selected Events.

Windows Event Viewer is a great way to get basic information about events on your system and store important information.

What are the best Windows 10 event log viewers?

Viewing the Windows Event Log

Many Windows users rely on this built-in tool to search for events on their computer. This tool has two major advantages: It is already installed on your computer and has a very intuitive interface. You can run the Windows Event Log Viewer by typing Event Viewer in the search bar. The tool screen is divided into three parts: Event categories are in the left sidebar, detailed information about the event is in the middle of the window, and available actions are in the right sidebar. In the left pane, you can select one or all of the event types. The upper part is focused on an administrative event. By tapping the various elements of the central control panel, you can obtain general or detailed information about the event. The next two categories on the left are Windows logs and application and service logs. The first, of course, refers exclusively to the operating system and the applications built into it. The action bar on the right gives you all sorts of options for interacting with the logs, but most importantly, the save and export options are essential for sending reports to a specialized service. The Windows Event Log Viewer provides reports on five log events:

  • Application Events : Application/software error messages
  • Security Events: Reports on the results of security measures
  • Configuration events: mainly related to domain controllers
  • System events: these are notifications sent by the Windows system files about problems that have occurred, and are usually self-correcting.
  • Forwarded events : These are messages sent by other computers.

Explorer event log

This event log viewer allows users to view, analyze, and control events in Windows event logs. Event Log Explorer is better than Microsoft’s Event Log Viewer and offers more features. This tool allows users to analyze various event logs: Security, application, system, configuration, directory services, DNS and more. The program can even access Windows event logs and log files from remote servers, and you can view several at once in separate windows or in one large consolidated window. If necessary, you can choose between the legacy Windows NT API and the modern Windows Event Log API for log access. The Event Log Explorer reads events from its own temporary storage to enable faster analysis of the logs. Of course, you can choose between main memory and disk memory. The software also allows you to combine events into a single view and view them as a global log. You can even save it as an EVT file. Other features are as follows:

  • Instant access to event logs – Event Log Explorer works with local and remote event logs, as well as log files in EVT and EVTX formats.
  • Efficient filtering – filter by event description with regular expressions, filter by security event parameters, or you can create complex filters and organize them in a filter library.
  • Event export and report generator – Event export and printing

This software does not require any installation process or additional DLL files, you just need to run the executable file. MyEventViewer allows you to select multiple event items and save them to HTML/Text/XML files. Of course, it is also possible to copy them to the clipboard and then paste them into an Excel document. The window in MyEventViewer can consist of 2 areas. The top section shows a list of all events, and if you select one, its description is displayed in the bottom window. The Logs menu allows you to delete/add logs you want to display in the main window. The program also has command line commands for advanced users. Administrators will be happy to use them for a more efficient process involving more computers. Other features are as follows:

  • It contains only the basic functions and options needed to monitor your system.
  • The simplified interface is very user-friendly
